Today I completed a series of prototypes exploring the idea of having a three dimensional form at the center of what has previously been mostly flat sculptures.
I also began experimenting with some of the new materials I recently bought. I used a combination of iridescent paper, iridescent acrylic, and two-way mirrored acrylic to create two pieces.
This week I spent a few days in New York, I went to several galleries and was also able to go to a plastics store to purchase more acrylic. I also bought some iridescent paper and acrylic to experiment with.
Today I created a new layered prototype. Each layer was a different design but had a few shared elements that stacked on top of each other creating separation between the layers.
Today I created two prototypes, one was a continuation of yesterday, a three-sided piece that connects to form a triangular shape. The other piece hangs from a single point, and since it is next to an open window in the studio the wind makes it naturally rotate.
Today I went for a walk through the BEP building. I explored a couple potential spaces on the second floor for an installation. One option is a hole in the floor that creates a space visible from both the first and second floors. Another good option is the stairwells, which feature a large vertical space with huge windows visible from each floor. I also was able to create a few more prototypes playing with more dimensionality. I’m planning on finishing another prototype tomorrow that has multiple sides.
Today I began by setting up my final shelf, it fits perfectly into the corner of my main wall. Then I began my first round of prototyping. I created three different prototypes, two sitting, one hanging, with the final one a smaller version featuring acrylic pieces.
Today I finished a second coat of paint on the studio walls. I decided to leave it at that and move onto shelving. I created two types of shelving, one more elevated to hang pieces from and the other more conventional shelving to place pieces on. Tomorrow I plan on finishing the last shelf, to fit in one corner of the studio and begin laser cutting my first prototype (which I spent time today creating).
Today I moved into my studio space. I cleaned up the space, set up a work space in the middle of the room, and began moving furniture around. The walls were covered in paint from the last resident so I spent most of today spot painting the walls, I will paint a second coat tomorrow and begin building shelves to show my work around the room. I also put up some early inspiration pieces on one of the walls.

This summer I have been given a grant to work on a site-specific installation for Singer Hall, a new building on the campus of Swarthmore College, I will be updating this blog with inspiration, sketches, process, models, images, etc. The project is sponsored by a grant generously provided by the Halpern Family for projects exploring the intersection of art and engineering.
